Of the three modern twin-engine types that formed the basis of the Luftwaffe's bomber armament in the second half of the 1930s, the Junkers Ju 86 was arguably the least successful. Despite its modern appearance, the Ju 86 represented a certain compromise from a design point of view, straddling between tradition and new directions in the development of aircraft technology. However, the main reason for its relative failure was the bet of the parent company Junkers Flugzeugwerke AG on an unusual drive in the form of a pair of Junkers Jumo 205C diesel engines. Unfortunately, these units in regular military service did not meet expectations and became the cause of a number of complications, which resulted in the premature cessation of serial production. The parent company tried to save the situation of the Ju 86 by changing the power unit to a classic star air-cooled nine-cylinder BMW 132, but even that did not save the structure in the eyes of the top of the Reich Ministry of Aviation.
Although in Czech the booklet includes a lot of intersting Ju86 pictures!! Alone for that it is recomended!
